Master's by Research in the United Kingdom

Most of the degreeis the project.

A research master's is assessed mainly by a thesis and often a viva, not by a year of taught modules. It usually takes one year full-time. An MPhil often takes two. It can be a step toward a PhD, and it is not the same thing as a taught master's that happens to include a dissertation.

Level 7, mostly research

The title is not the degree

An MRes, MA by Research, MSc by Research and MPhil sit at FHEQ Level 7, the same level as a taught master's, and at SCQF Level 11 in Scotland. A PhD is Level 8. In a taught master's the dissertation is usually about a third of the course. Here the project and thesis carry most or all of the assessment, often with a viva.

Common UK research master's titles
AwardTypical format
MResResearch-methods training plus one or more substantial projects. Often preparation for a PhD, and sometimes the first year of a 1+3 doctorate.
MSc by ResearchMostly independent research in science, engineering, technology or a quantitative field. Thesis and usually a viva.
MA by ResearchMostly independent research in the arts, humanities or social sciences. Thesis and usually a viva.
MSc (Engineering) by ResearchA research-led engineering degree built around an approved project and thesis.
MPhilOften two years full-time, with a larger thesis. At many universities, PhD students register as MPhil/PhD first. It is not the same award as a one-year research master's.

Where it sits

Five routes between a degree and a PhD

A previous master's does not automatically mean another master's is required before a PhD. The question is how much genuine research preparation already exists.

  1. 01

    Bachelor's, then a research master's, then a PhD

A strong bachelor's can be direct entry to a research master's, and in some science and engineering fields even to a PhD. Universities usually look for the equivalent of a UK 2:1 or better in a relevant subject. Edinburgh may accept a four-year bachelor's from Kathmandu, Pokhara or Tribhuvan University at first class or GPA 3.25, or a three-year bachelor's plus a completed master's at first class. Sheffield looks for a four-year bachelor's, or a three-year bachelor's followed by a two-year master's. Manchester usually wants a bachelor's and a master's at 80% or above for postgraduate and PhD entry. Subject, the topic, a supervisor and English still decide it.

  2. 02

A structured MRes that teaches research first

Many MRes programmes are for students without publications or a finished proposal. Methods, literature, analysis, ethics and proposal writing come first, then the project. Manchester's MRes Management, for example, is 12 months and combines training with a substantial project. Some cohorts are allocated a project after enrolment, so a statement of research interests can be enough. UK doctoral training partnerships also offer 1+3 routes: one MRes year, then a three-year PhD.

  3. 03

    A taught master's with a strong dissertation

The most common route to a UK PhD. A substantial dissertation and a Merit or Distinction can already be enough to apply directly. A second master's should not be recommended automatically.

  4. 04

A completed research master's or MPhil

Clear evidence of thesis writing, research design and working with a supervisor. A conventional route into a PhD, not a guarantee of one.

  5. 05

    MPhil/PhD registration, then an upgrade

Many universities register new doctoral students as MPhil/PhD. An upgrade, usually within the first year or 18 months, decides whether they continue to the PhD or exit with an MPhil. Some allow a research master's student to transfer. None of this is automatic, and a change can affect the CAS and the visa. Check the rules before enrolling.

PGR, not PGT

A dissertation does not make it a research degree

Universities call research master's, MPhil and PhD programmes postgraduate research, and taught master's postgraduate taught. On the CAS, a research course at master's level is RQF 7 Research, or SCQF 11 Research in Scotland. That line can decide dependants, how term time is defined, and some scholarships.

Most MA and MSc by Research and MRes programmes take one year full-time or two part-time. At Leeds, a Masters by Research is one year and a thesis of up to 30,000 words plus a viva. An MPhil there is two years and up to 60,000 words. Part-time Student visa holders cannot work, so most international students study full-time. UKRI's minimum stipend for 2026/27 is £21,805, and that funding is mainly for doctorates. Research master's students are usually self-funded or on a university scholarship.

The year itself

A project, a supervisor, then a thesis

Students refine a problem, review the literature, design the study, get ethics or lab approvals where they are required, then collect and analyse evidence. They meet supervisors, pass milestones, and in many programmes defend the thesis in a viva. MRes programmes also include compulsory research-training modules. There is no single international tuition fee: laboratory courses can add bench fees, and a scholarship may cover fees, a stipend, or both.

A stronger fit when

You have a degree but limited formal research experience, you want methods training before a PhD, or you already have a topic and want to work with a supervisor. It is a weaker fit when the aim is professional conversion, registration in a regulated occupation, or a taught programme with a placement.

After the award

A strong result supports a PhD application, and some universities allow a transfer after progress is shown. Neither is promised at the offer stage. Graduates also move into research roles and specialist work that needs evidence, design and reporting. The degree does not itself guarantee a job, a work visa, professional registration or settlement.

Applying

Proposal, supervisor, then the university

A full proposal is common for MA and MSc by Research and MPhil applications. Some structured MRes programmes only want a statement of research interests. Follow that department's word limit. A first email to a supervisor should be specific: qualifications, the topic, why their work matches, the start date and the funding plan. Generic bulk emails rarely work.

  1. 1

    Identify the research field.

  2. 2

Assess whether the bachelor's or master's included enough research.

  3. 3

Decide between a research master's and a direct PhD, especially if a dissertation already exists.

  4. 4

Compare universities, centres, facilities and supervisors. Ranking alone is a weak reason.

  5. 5

Check academic, English and ATAS requirements.

  6. 6

Write the proposal or research statement for that supervisor and department.

  7. 7

Prepare the CV, transcripts, certificates, previous dissertation, publications if any, English evidence, references and passport.

  8. 8

Apply to the university's own system. Research degrees do not go through UCAS. Many universities have more than one start date.

  9. 9

Apply for scholarships. Funding deadlines are often months before the course, and separate from admission.

  10. 10

    Complete any interview.

  11. 11

Meet the offer conditions and receive the CAS.

  12. 12

Apply for the Student visa, including funds and ATAS if it is required.

Funding for Nepali applicants. Chevening, for which Nepal is eligible, funds one-year taught master's courses. The 2027/28 deadline was 6 October 2026, and a research master's is not the usual Chevening route. Nepal is not a Commonwealth member, so Commonwealth Master's and PhD Scholarships do not apply. A common English range is IELTS 6.5–7.0. Visa rules require CEFR B2. Do not convert a Nepali GPA into a UK 2:1 yourself.

Visa

  • Student visa fee

    Current planning information
£558 from outside the UK, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge.
  • London maintenance

    Current planning information
£1,529 a month, up to £13,761, for applications to 29 November 2026. £1,570 a month, up to £14,130, from 30 November 2026. Plus unpaid course fees.
  • Outside London

    Current planning information
    £1,171 a month, up to £10,539, to 29 November 2026. £1,203 a month, up to £10,827, from 30 November 2026. Plus unpaid course fees.
  • Funds and CAS

    Current planning information
28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of the application, in the student's or a parent's account. Nepali applicants must submit this evidence. Research courses are shown on the CAS as RQF 7 Research, or SCQF 11 Research in Scotland.
  • Work. Full-time research students at a university can generally work 20 hours a week in term time. There is no long summer vacation. Full-time work is only in holidays the university agrees, and after the course ends.
  • Dependants and ATAS. Since 1 January 2024, most master's students cannot bring dependants. A research-based higher degree at RQF 7 or above, lasting at least nine months, can be the exception, if the CAS classifies it as research. Nepali nationals in certain science and technology subjects need an ATAS certificate before the visa.

Do not assume

  • Assuming every master's qualifies for PhD entry
  • Treating a high GPA as a substitute for research experience
  • Calling any master's with a dissertation a research degree
  • Assuming every course with MRes in the title allows dependants
  • Treating a supervisor's interest as an offer
  • Treating admission as a scholarship
  • Expecting Chevening or Commonwealth Scholarships to fund a research master's for a Nepali student
  • Sending one unchanged proposal to every university
  • Promising that the degree transfers into a PhD, or that it guarantees a job or a visa

Frequently asked questions

No. A master's with a strong dissertation, or in some fields a strong bachelor's, can be enough to apply directly.

An MRes usually combines formal methods training with one or more projects. An MSc or MA by Research is mainly a single independent project and thesis. Compare the balance of training, project and assessment, not the title.

Not always. Structured MRes programmes may develop the proposal after enrolment. MA and MSc by Research and MPhil programmes more often ask for one. Do not invent publications.

Sometimes. Structured MRes programmes may allocate supervisors later. MA and MSc by Research and MPhil programmes often expect you to name one. Read the department's instructions.

Usually one year full-time or two part-time. Assessment centres on a thesis, often followed by a viva. An MPhil commonly takes two years.

Only if the course is a research-based higher degree at RQF Level 7 or above, lasting at least nine months, and the CAS shows it as a research course. Some courses with Research in the title are classified as taught.

Yes, if it is completed successfully and the other requirements are met. Master's graduates applying from 1 January 2027 receive 18 months.

Look at the supervisor, the topic, recent publications, active projects, facilities, scholarships, thesis rules and the real cost if funding is not secured. Ranking is one factor.

A PhD is not ruled out, but research readiness is harder to show. Routes include an MRes, an MA or MSc by Research, an MPhil, or an assessment of equivalent research experience.

Relevant experience can, where the work involved investigation, analysis, technical reports, evaluation projects, data, new systems or professional research. Years employed, on their own, are not research readiness. At Genix we recommend presenting that work as evidence of research capability, not as a number of years.
