Genuine Student Requirement

Grades and fundsare not the whole case.

UKVI may look beyond grades and bank statements to assess whether your course choice, finances and study plans form a credible student journey. The decision-maker has to be satisfied, on the balance of probability, that you are a genuine student.

Genuine student

What UKVI is really asking

The UK does have a genuine student requirement, although it works differently from Australia's Genuine Student system. For a Student visa to succeed, the decision-maker must be satisfied, on the balance of probability, that you are a genuine student. That can involve the information in the application and, where required, a credibility interview.

In practice: This should come from your actual circumstances — not from memorising scripted answers.

What UKVI may consider

Caseworker guidance says the relevant factors can include all of the following. Financial circumstances are part of the same assessment, not a separate one.

  • Previous immigration history
  • Educational background and any study gaps
  • Commitment to the course
  • Reasons for choosing the programme and the institution
  • Understanding of living arrangements
  • How the course relates to plans after graduation
  • Whether there is a credible source of money for tuition and living costs, and how those funds were obtained
  • English ability, where a concern about it has already arisen

What you should be able to explain

Naturally, in your own words. An officer is listening for a plan that belongs to you.

  • Why you selected this subject
  • Why this university makes sense for you
  • How the programme relates to your previous education or employment
  • Why you chose the UK
  • How you will finance your studies
  • What you realistically plan to do after graduation

Study gaps or a change of subject

A study gap or a change of subject does not automatically mean a refusal. UKVI guidance explicitly considers whether there are credible reasons for returning to study after a gap, and whether the proposed programme makes sense in light of your academic and career plans.

The credibility interview

You may be invited to an interview. Interviews can be arranged remotely, or in another format UKVI specifies. Failing to attend without an acceptable explanation can lead to a refusal.
