Popular Master's Degrees in New Zealand

The right master's startswith your bachelor's.

A New Zealand master's carries a minimum of 120 credits at NZQCF Level 8 and above, including at least 40 at Level 9 — and commonly runs to 120, 180 or 240 credits. Which of those you can enter depends on what you already hold. This guide maps ten fields to the backgrounds that support admission, and separates academic master's degrees from the accredited programmes where a regulator, not a university, sets the bar.

How New Zealand providers assess Nepalese applicants

  • 01

    No universal GPA for Nepal

There is no single New Zealand GPA or Nepalese percentage that applies to every applicant. Providers assess the level, duration, awarding institution, subject relevance and grades of your previous qualification individually.

  • 02

    120, 180 or 240 credits

A 180-credit master's normally admits a bachelor's graduate meeting the required standard. A 120-credit master's normally builds on Honours, a PGDip or relevant professional experience. Conversion master's degrees can admit graduates from a different field where the programme is designed for it.

  • 03

    English scores are indicative

IELTS 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 is a common postgraduate benchmark — not a national rule. Initial Teacher Education uses the Teaching Council standard equivalent to 7.0 in each skill, and several health programmes go higher still.

Flexible entry

Business, Professional Accounting & Management

Business master's degrees run from broad conversion programmes to specialist study in accounting, analytics, finance, marketing, supply chain and management.

Popular master's programmes

  • Master of Management
  • Master of Professional Accounting
  • Master of Business Analytics
  • Master of Applied Finance / Finance
  • Master of Marketing
  • Master of Supply Chain Management
  • Master of International Business
  • MBA and related management programmes

Who can apply

  • Many 180-point conversion master's programmes accept a recognised bachelor's degree from business or another discipline
  • Specialist finance, economics and analytics programmes may require prior quantitative study
  • MBA programmes commonly expect relevant professional or management experience, though requirements vary

Key entry considerations

Professional Accounting can support accounting and audit careers, and External Auditor and Internal Auditor are currently Green List occupations subject to remuneration and other immigration requirements. Most general management, marketing and HR roles are not automatically Green List pathways.

Professional accreditation & recognition

General management degrees have no single professional regulator. Professional Accounting programmes should be checked for recognition by bodies such as CA ANZ, CPA Australia and other listed accounting bodies — the University of Auckland's Master of Professional Accounting, for example, is recognised by CA ANZ, CPA Australia, ACCA and CIMA.

Academic guide

A recognised bachelor's degree is the normal starting point. Minimum grades vary by provider and programme; B−, B or provider-specific GPE/GPA thresholds are common. Nepalese degrees are assessed individually rather than through one national percentage rule.

If direct master's entry is not met

Pre-master's or postgraduate preparation where formally accepted; a Graduate Diploma for subject conversion; a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma for advanced preparation; English pathway study where language is the main gap.

Career opportunities

  • Accountant
  • Auditor
  • Financial or business analyst
  • Management and strategy roles
  • Marketing
  • Human resources
  • Supply chain
  • Business development
  • Consulting

Some roles need registration, admission or experience first. A course does not guarantee employment or migration.

Routes in when direct master's entry is not met

Start by identifying the actual reason — qualification level, subject mismatch, grade, English, professional prerequisites or insufficient research preparation. The right pathway follows from the gap, not the other way round.

  • 01

    Pre-master's / postgraduate preparation

Leads to an approved master's where the university operates a formal pathway — for example, selected routes through the University of Waikato College or UC International College.

  • 02

    Graduate Diploma (Level 7)

Builds a new subject foundation or professional conversion before postgraduate study.

  • 03

Postgraduate Certificate / Diploma (Level 8)

Advanced study that can sometimes form the first stage of a master's, or evidence postgraduate academic readiness.

  • 04

    English-language pathway

Used where academic entry is met but English sits below the destination programme's requirement.

  • 05

    Prerequisite or bridging study

Mathematics, statistics, programming, engineering, health-science or another required background.

  • 06

    Relevant professional experience

Accepted by selected professional master's programmes where the university's regulations allow it.

Check the whole package before you commit. A Graduate Diploma, a Postgraduate Diploma and a master's stay separate qualifications for immigration purposes. From 16 November 2026, transferred or cross-credited study from a PGDip into a master's does not count toward the 30 weeks that must be completed while enrolled in the Level 9 master's itself for a three-year Post Study Work Visa.

Work, partner and post-study settings

Six positions that decide what a master's actually means for your household — not just for your transcript.

  • Student work rights

    Current New Zealand position
Most eligible taught master's students can receive visa conditions allowing up to 25 hours of work a week during study, and full-time work during qualifying scheduled breaks. Always follow the conditions printed on the individual eVisa.
  • Research master's work rights

    Current New Zealand position
A qualifying Masters by Research can carry unlimited work rights. INZ currently interprets that as a master's containing at least 90 credits of thesis, dissertation, substantial research paper or scholarly creative work.
  • Partner / spouse

    Current New Zealand position
A student studying an NZQCF Level 9 master's can support an eligible partner for a Partner of a Student Work Visa. The partner does not need a New Zealand job offer, but genuine-and-stable partnership and other visa requirements apply.
  • Dependent children during study

    Current New Zealand position
A Level 9 master's student does not directly receive the dependent-child domestic-school benefit a PhD student does. However, if the partner obtains a Partner of a Student Work Visa, they may be able to support the children for Dependent Child Student Visas — eligible children of work-visa holders are treated as domestic students at primary and secondary school.
  • Post Study Work Visa

    Current New Zealand position
An eligible Level 9 master's graduate who completes at least 30 weeks of full-time study while enrolled in the master's itself can receive a three-year PSWV. Degree-level graduates have open work rights, subject to professional registration for the occupation.
  • The one-PSWV rule

    Current New Zealand position
A person can normally receive only one Post Study Work Visa. That matters when a student considers using a PSWV after an earlier qualification before later completing a master's.

Research-intensive master's programmes work differently — the 90-credit research threshold changes both work rights and PhD readiness.

The case for it

Why consider New Zealand for a master's

  • A clear Level 9 framework

NZQA defines 120-, 180- and 240-credit master's structures, so there is a route that fits your previous qualification rather than one shape everyone is forced into.

  • Professional conversion options

Selected programmes let graduates enter a new regulated or specialist field at master's level — professional accounting, teaching, nursing, physiotherapy, pharmacy, social work and professional engineering.

  • Partner work opportunity

Students in a Level 9 master's can support an eligible partner for a work visa, subject to Immigration New Zealand's partnership requirements.

  • Three-year post-study work

An eligible graduate completing at least 30 weeks in the Level 9 master's can receive a three-year Post Study Work Visa under current settings.

  • Research progression

A master's can lead to a PhD application where the qualification contains sufficient research and you meet the target university's doctoral-entry standard.

  • Value beyond migration

Professional recognition, specialist knowledge, work-integrated learning, research skills and transferability to Nepal should still matter even if immigration settings change.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

No. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0 is a common postgraduate benchmark, but professional programmes go higher. Initial Teacher Education uses the Teaching Council standard equivalent to 7.0 in each skill, and some graduate-entry health programmes use 7.0 overall with higher band minimums.

Possibly, but not automatically. NZQA permits 180-credit master's entry from a bachelor's degree at the required academic standard, and individual universities decide whether an overseas qualification is equivalent. A 120-credit master's usually expects Honours, a PGDip or relevant professional experience. Your exact degree and institution have to be assessed by the provider.

A 120-credit master's normally builds on Honours, a PGDip or relevant professional experience. A 180-credit master's commonly admits a suitable bachelor's graduate. A 240-credit master's is a longer route, often used for conversion or more extensive advanced study. The programme regulations decide the exact entry route.

No. Specialist engineering, data science, clinical health and architecture usually require a closely related background. Conversion programmes — selected management, IT, professional accounting, teaching, nursing, social work or pharmacy pathways — can admit graduates from other fields where the prerequisites are met.

It depends on the gap. A pre-master's can prepare you for an approved destination programme; a Graduate Diploma provides a new Level 7 subject foundation; a PGDip provides Level 8 advanced preparation; English pathways address language; and technical prerequisites can be completed separately.

Yes, where the provider offers a formal academic pathway. Confirm the whole package in writing, including progression grades and credit. Immigration treats each qualification separately, and cross-credited PGDip study does not count toward the 30 weeks that must be completed in the master's itself for a three-year master's PSWV.

Eligible students can generally have visa conditions allowing up to 25 hours a week during study and full-time work during qualifying scheduled breaks — check the individual eVisa. A qualifying research master's with at least 90 research credits can receive unlimited work rights under the current INZ interpretation.

A student studying a Level 9 master's can support an eligible partner for a Partner of a Student Work Visa. The partner does not need a New Zealand job offer, but the couple must meet the genuine-and-stable partnership and other visa requirements.

A master's student does not directly receive the PhD dependent-child benefit. However, if your partner receives a Partner of a Student Work Visa, they may be able to support Dependent Child Student Visas — eligible children of work-visa holders are treated as domestic students at New Zealand primary and secondary schools.

Under current rules, an eligible Level 9 master's graduate who completes at least 30 weeks of full-time study while enrolled in that master's can receive a three-year Post Study Work Visa with open work rights.

No. The Green List is occupation-based. You must still meet the exact job, qualification, registration, remuneration, experience and visa requirements, and a master's degree does not guarantee employment or residence.

No. Immigration settings change. A better decision is a master's that matches your prior education, professional goals, registration requirements, employability and long-term value in Nepal or elsewhere — with Green List relevance treated as one factor among several.
