Diploma Programmes in New Zealand

Two qualifications shareone word.

A technical diploma builds practical capability for work, and selected ones appear on Immigration New Zealand's non-degree work-visa list. A university pathway diploma contains first-year degree study and takes you into Year 2 of a bachelor's. They are not variations of each other, and the difference decides both your career route and your visa. This guide separates them, row by row.

Two things share the word “diploma”

Some diplomas are practical technical qualifications for employment in engineering, construction or agriculture. Others are university pathway diplomas containing first-year degree study, which let successful students progress straight into Year 2 of a bachelor's. From Nepal, the word should never be assessed on its own.

01

Technical & career-focused diplomas

Designed to build practical and technical capability for employment, or for progression into higher-level study. Especially relevant in engineering, construction and agriculture, where selected non-degree qualifications are recognised by Immigration New Zealand for Post Study Work Visa purposes.

Employment first, with study progression as an option.

02

University pathway diplomas

Normally Level 5 programmes providing a supported alternative entry route into a bachelor's degree. Selected programmes incorporate first-year bachelor-level study, so successful completion can lead directly into Year 2 of the related degree.

Academic progression — not standalone migration or post-study work.

How the levels work

New Zealand diplomas sit inside the NZQCF. Rather than splitting them into “vocational” and “higher education”, focus on the qualification level, credits, content, provider, progression arrangement and immigration relevance.

  • Level 5

In-depth technical or theoretical knowledge in a specific field.

  • Level 6

More specialised knowledge and skills in the discipline.

  • Level 7

Specialist technical knowledge, normally building on significant prior achievement.

Genix tip: before choosing a diploma, check four things together — the exact NZQCF qualification and level; the intended career or bachelor's degree; Post Study Work Visa eligibility; and, where relevant, the current Green List occupation requirements.

Route one

Technical diplomas that support a work visa

Immigration New Zealand lists selected non-degree Level 4–7 qualifications that can support a Post Study Work Visa. On that visa, the work must relate to the qualification. Some of the same qualifications also match Green List occupation requirements — others need additional qualifications, professional membership, registration or experience.

Post-study work after a technical diploma

Completing a diploma does not automatically give a graduate a Post Study Work Visa. For a non-degree qualification at Level 7 or below, the qualification must be on INZ's approved list, and you must have studied it full time in New Zealand for the full duration required to gain it.

Where the visa is granted on the basis of a non-degree Level 7-or- below qualification, the graduate must work in an occupation related to what they studied — normally reflected in the visa conditions themselves.

How long it lasts: for qualifications at Level 8 or below, INZ generally grants the visa for a period equal to the time spent studying the qualification in New Zealand, as confirmed by the provider. An eligible two-year technical diploma may therefore support a visa broadly reflecting that qualifying study period, subject to the rules current at the time and to the individual application.

Two different tests

A work visa is not a residence pathway.

A qualification can be PSWV-eligible without meeting Green List residence requirements. A Level 6 electrical engineering diploma is on the non-degree PSWV list, but the current Green List Electrical Engineering Technician route generally requires higher-level qualification evidence or professional registration. A Level 6 quantity surveying diploma likewise supports PSWV-related work, while the Green List Quantity Surveyor route has separate bachelor and professional-membership requirements.

Every stage in that chain has its own eligibility rules. None of them follows automatically from the one before it.

Graduate visa changes from 16 November 2026

Not yet in force

A. A new Short Term Graduate Work Visa

For eligible graduates completing certain NZQCF Level 5–7 qualifications that do not qualify for a standard Post Study Work Visa. It can provide up to six months of open work rights, subject to its eligibility conditions — but it does not apply to English-language, foundation or bridging qualifications. University pathway diplomas are often designed as bridging programmes, so do not assume a Year-2 pathway diploma will qualify. Check the exact qualification and its INZ classification.

B. PSWV extended to Level 7 Graduate Diplomas

Post Study Work Visa eligibility extends to graduates of an NZQCF Level 7 Graduate Diploma who studied the full qualification in New Zealand and already hold a bachelor's degree. This is a different category from the Level 5 pathway diplomas on this page.

Route two

Pathway diplomas that go straight into Year 2

For students close to direct university entry who would benefit from a supported first year — smaller classes, academic skills development and extra English support. Unlike a foundation programme, which leads into Year 1, selected pathway diplomas contain first-year degree study, so completion plus any progression conditions takes you into Year 2.

Do pathway diplomas give a Post Study Work Visa? Usually the value of a Level 5 pathway diploma is progression into the bachelor's, not a visa. For non-degree qualifications at Level 7 or below, only qualifications on INZ's approved list qualify for the standard PSWV. The intended route is: pathway diploma → Year 2 → complete the Level 7 bachelor's → assess PSWV eligibility on the completed degree under the rules in force at graduation.

Entry requirements and work rights

There is no single national entry score for every diploma. Providers set their own academic, English and subject prerequisites.

  • Technical diplomas

Engineering and construction programmes may require secondary-school mathematics, physics or other relevant subjects, and English requirements vary. Toi Ohomai currently lists IELTS Academic 6.0 with no band below 5.5 for its Level 6 quantity surveying programme; other providers set different requirements.

  • University pathway diplomas

These often use a slightly lower English threshold than direct bachelor's entry, because academic-language support is built into the programme. Current examples: IELTS Academic 5.5 with no band below 5.0 at the University of Otago and University of Waikato College; AUT's pathway diplomas commonly use 5.5 overall, with 5.5 in writing and at least 5.0 in the other bands.

  • Academic equivalency

Academic requirements remain country-specific. Have your Grade 12 / NEB results assessed against the exact provider's international-entry table rather than relying on a generic percentage.

Work rights while studying

From 3 November 2025, eligible tertiary students can be granted student-visa conditions allowing up to 25 hours of work a week while studying, and many student visas also permit full-time work during scheduled breaks. The actual rights are whatever is printed on your own eVisa, and must be checked individually.

Part-time work gives local experience and supplementary income — but it should never be the plan for covering tuition or essential living costs.

Choosing

Who it suits, and how to compare options

Who should consider these pathways

  • Nepalese Grade 12 graduates who want a practical, career-focused technical qualification in engineering, construction or agriculture
  • Students whose academic or English profile is close to direct bachelor's entry and who want a supported route into Year 2 at a New Zealand university
  • CTEVT diploma holders who want further technical study or degree progression, subject to provider recognition and individual credit assessment
  • Students who want a qualification with clear further-study value, rather than one chosen because it looks cheaper or easier to enter

How to compare diploma options

  1. Define the end goal: direct employment after a technical diploma, or progression to a bachelor's degree
  2. Confirm the exact NZQCF qualification title, level and credit value
  3. For technical diplomas, check the current INZ Post Study Work Visa qualification list
  4. Where a Green List occupation is part of the plan, check that occupation's qualification, registration, experience and pay requirements separately
  5. For university pathway diplomas, obtain written confirmation of the Year-2 progression and credit arrangement
  6. Check English, academic and subject prerequisites for the exact intake
  7. Compare total cost across the full pathway, not just the first-year diploma fee
  8. Recheck immigration rules before enrolment and again before graduation — lists and visa settings change

How we counsel it: A diploma is not better simply because it appears on a list, and a university pathway diploma is not less valuable because it does not independently provide post-study work. The right programme is the one that fits the student's academic background, career objective, budget and realistic further-study or employment pathway.

Where it leads

What a diploma can lead to

  • 01

Technical employment and New Zealand experience

Selected engineering, construction and agriculture diplomas can support a Post Study Work Visa and related employment, letting graduates build practical New Zealand experience.

  • 02

Direct progression to a bachelor's degree

A properly structured university pathway diploma can take a student into Year 2 of a related degree with first-year credit already built into the pathway.

  • 03

    Further professional or skilled pathways

For some occupations a diploma is one part of a broader professional or Green List pathway. Additional work experience, registration, professional membership, remuneration or higher qualifications may still be required.

  • 04

Career value in Nepal and elsewhere

Engineering, construction, quantity surveying, technical management and applied study stay relevant for students returning to Nepal — particularly in infrastructure, construction, manufacturing, transport, consulting and project-based industries. Value depends on the field, the employer and local recognition requirements.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The Green List contains occupations and their requirements. Some diploma qualifications can meet or contribute to those requirements, but the course itself is never automatically a Green List course.

Current INZ-listed non-degree pathways include selected Level 6 engineering and construction diplomas, and Level 5+ farm management, agriculture or dairy technology qualifications. Always check the exact qualification against the current INZ list.

No. A Post Study Work Visa and a Green List residence pathway are separate. Residence may require a qualifying job or job offer, professional registration, work experience, remuneration and other visa criteria.

Yes, for selected pathway diplomas. Current examples include Otago's Arts, Commerce and Science diplomas, UCIC's Commerce, Engineering and Science diplomas, Waikato College's Business and Computer Science diplomas, AUT's pathway diplomas, and Massey's Diploma (Business).

No. Foundation normally prepares a student for Year 1. A Year-2 pathway diploma includes first-year-equivalent study and can carry credit into the bachelor's degree.

Do not assume so. The standard PSWV for non-degree Level 7 or below is limited to qualifications on INZ's approved list, and the main purpose of most Level 5 university pathway diplomas is progression to the bachelor's degree.

From 16 November 2026, some graduates may be able to use the new Short Term Graduate Work Visa for up to six months of open work rights — but foundation and bridging qualifications are excluded. Check the exact qualification before relying on this option.

Eligible students may hold visa conditions allowing up to 25 hours a week during study, with full-time work during qualifying scheduled breaks. Always check the conditions on the individual eVisa.

Possibly, but credit is never automatic. The New Zealand provider must assess the previous qualification, its subjects and learning outcomes before confirming recognition or advanced standing.
