Master of Research in Australia
A thesis is not the sameas a research degree.
A Masters Degree (Research) is an AQF Level 9 qualification devoting at least two-thirds of the student load to research leading to a thesis. A coursework master's carrying a minor thesis is not — whatever it is called. That distinction decides HDR classification, RTP scholarship eligibility, supervision, and whether the 48-hour fortnightly work cap applies to you at all.

The qualification
What a Master by Research actually is
A Master by Research or Master of Philosophy is a postgraduate research degree for students who want to develop advanced research capability through a substantial independent project.
In Australia a Masters Degree (Research) is an AQF Level 9 qualification, while a doctoral degree such as a PhD is Level 10. The research master's is designed to prepare graduates for research, scholarship and further learning — including progression toward doctoral research.
For graduates who want to build research experience before undertaking a PhD, it is an important academic pathway rather than a detour.
Of the student load
A Masters Degree (Research) normally devotes at least two-thirds of the student load to research leading to a thesis or dissertation. That is the line between it and a conventional coursework master's carrying a smaller research project — and it is a qualification type, not a course title.
AQF qualifications; TEQSA glossary — course with a major research component.
The title alone is not enough
Universities use different names for the same qualification type. Check whether the course is formally classified as a Masters Degree (Research), and examine its research structure, thesis requirements and progression opportunities.

Where it fits
Five routes between a master's and a PhD
The pathway is not identical for every student. You do not automatically need another master's before starting a PhD simply because your previous qualification was a master's — what decides it is how much genuine research preparation you already have.
Bachelor's degree → research master's → PhD
Bachelor's degreeResearch master's, MRes or MPhilPhDYou do not always need a coursework master's before entering postgraduate research. At selected Australian universities a relevant bachelor's degree gives direct entry to a Master by Research, Master of Research or MPhil. The route depends on the university, discipline, grades, previous research preparation and supervisor availability.
This is especially useful for graduates who already know the research area they want to pursue and want to build formal research capability before applying for a PhD. Where a bachelor's contains little formal research, a structured Master of Research is particularly valuable, because some universities build research-methods training into the degree before the major thesis.
- Edith Cowan University — the Master of Science by Research accepts a bachelor's in a cognate discipline; the Master of Business by Research currently requires a WAM of 70% or higher; the Master of Medical and Health Science by Research requires a WAM of 65% or higher
- University of Canberra — the Master of Research accepts an AQF Level 7 bachelor's in the same discipline as the proposed research, subject to supervision being available and to the university's HDR requirements
Direct entry from a bachelor's is not automatic admission. Universities still assess results, discipline relevance, research preparation, the proposed topic, supervisor capacity, English and the equivalence of overseas qualifications — check the exact current requirements rather than assuming every Australian research master's accepts a three-year bachelor's.
Structured programs where the proposal is developed during the course
Bachelor's or coursework master'sResearch training & proposalThesisSome Australian providers offer research master's programs structured for applicants who do not already have publications or a fully developed proposal. Research methods, literature review, proposal development and research ethics are taught before the major thesis — a practical transition into research.
It is important not to describe these as having “no research requirements”. Published admission rules differ: some providers do not list a full proposal or previous publications as standard application requirements, while others ask for a shorter Statement of Intent or evidence of previous research experience.
Coursework master's with a strong research component → PhD
Coursework master's with substantial researchStrong academic performancePossible direct PhD applicationIf your previous master's included a substantial independent thesis or research project and you achieved the required academic standard, you may already be eligible to apply directly for a PhD. Monash, for example, currently recognises a relevant master's containing a research thesis or project equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study as one possible entry route, subject to its academic standard.
A second master's should never be recommended automatically.
Monash University — graduate research admission criteria.
Completed Master by Research or MPhil → PhD
Research master's or MPhilPhD applicationDoctoral studyA completed relevant Master by Research or MPhil demonstrating independent research capability is the conventional pathway into a PhD. Australian universities commonly weigh previous research degrees when assessing whether an applicant has demonstrated the ability to undertake advanced independent research.
It works from either starting point: bachelor's → research master's → PhD, or coursework master's → research master's → PhD.
Research master's → transfer or upgrade to PhD
Begin a research master'sDemonstrate progressTransfer to PhDAt some universities you can begin a research master's and later request a transfer into a PhD without completing the master's first. This is not automatic and the rules are not identical everywhere — the University of Sydney, for example, states that students may move from a Master of Philosophy or Research to a PhD after the first year where satisfactory progress is demonstrated and the faculty approves.
- Academic progress and research milestones
- The quality and scope of the research project
- Supervisor recommendations
- Whether the project has developed to doctoral scope
- PhD admission eligibility, and faculty or graduate research approval
Check the university's formal transfer rules before enrolling — this should never be promised at application stage. University of Sydney — postgraduate research.

Programs that teach the proposal after you enrol
Particularly relevant if you are interested in research but have not published or prepared a full proposal. These providers build research methods, literature review and proposal development into the course before the thesis — but none of them asks for nothing.

Never read these as “no research requirements”. For many structured research master's programs no prior publication is required and a full thesis proposal may be developed after enrolment — but a Statement of Intent, a research-experience statement, a discipline match or a minimum GPA may still be required. The question is not only whether a course is called a research master's, but what research preparation the provider expects before admission and what training is built into the first stage of the degree.
The classification that decides everything
Research master's vs a coursework thesis
What a Higher Degree by Research is
Australian universities use the term HDR. For Research Training Program purposes, HDR study includes research master's degrees and research doctorates, including PhDs, and the RTP supports eligible students undertaking them.
Bachelor Honours can be an important pathway into research, but it is not the same qualification type as an RTP-eligible research master's or doctorate, and should never be described as one.
A thesis does not make it a research degree
A coursework master's may include a capstone, research project, dissertation, minor thesis or research-methods subjects. That does not make it a Masters Degree (Research). TEQSA distinguishes the two by whether research is the dominant component.
The distinction affects
- PhD preparation
- HDR classification
- RTP scholarship eligibility
- Course structure and supervision
- Thesis requirements
- Student visa work conditions

Time & work
How long it takes, and what you actually do
Research master's degrees are commonly completed in about one to two years full time, though the exact duration depends on the university and program. Under the RTP, scholarship support can run up to 2 years full time or 4 years part time — the university sets the actual period within those rules.
The research lifecycle
Requirements differ by discipline, but students commonly work through the same structured process. Some programs also carry compulsory coursework or research-training subjects.
- Refine a research problem and research questions
- Undertake an advanced literature review
- Develop a theoretical or conceptual framework where relevant
- Complete research methodology training
- Develop the research design
- Obtain ethics, safety, laboratory or data approvals where required
- Conduct experiments, interviews, surveys, modelling, fieldwork, archival or creative research
- Analyse and interpret findings
- Meet supervisors and research panels
- Complete confirmation or progress milestones
- Participate in seminars and research training
- Produce and submit a substantial thesis or approved research output
Who should consider one
- You hold a bachelor's or master's but have limited formal research experience
- You want to prepare for a PhD, or build evidence of independent research capability
- You are interested in an academic or research career
- You want to investigate a specific problem in depth
- You want advanced research methodology training
- You want to work in research and development
- You are interested in policy, data, consulting, laboratory or scientific research
- You need stronger preparation before applying competitively for PhD admission or scholarships
When it is the wrong choice
It is less appropriate where your main objective is simply professional conversion or registration in a regulated occupation.
Getting in
Entry, proposal, supervisor and the application
There is no single Australian admission standard for every research master's. Universities assess applicants individually by program and field, and meeting minimum eligibility does not guarantee admission.
What entry is assessed on
- A recognised previous bachelor's or master's qualification
- Relevance of the previous field of study
- Academic performance
- A previous thesis, dissertation or research project
- Research-methods preparation
- Evidence of independent research ability
- The proposed research topic, and supervisor availability
- Publications or research outputs where relevant
- Professional research experience where accepted
- References and English-language proficiency
Universities may also consider equivalent research capability through combinations of qualifications, publications, professional experience and research employment.
What a strong proposal covers
A proposal is commonly required during applications, supervisor discussions or an EOI — but it is not universal at application stage. Some structured programs develop it after enrolment and ask instead for a Statement of Intent or evidence of research experience.
- A clear working title
- Background to the research problem, and the research gap
- Research aim, objectives, and questions or hypotheses
- Relevant literature
- Methodology, proposed data or evidence, and approach to analysis
- Significance, originality and likely contribution
- Feasibility and an indicative timeline
- Alignment with the intended supervisor and the university's research strengths
- Academic references
Length and format vary by university and discipline. Follow the target institution's instructions rather than sending one fixed proposal everywhere.
Finding a supervisor
Supervisor fit is one of the most important parts of a research-degree application — do not choose a university only for its ranking or brand. Before making contact, review:
- The researcher's academic profile and current research interests
- Recent publications and current projects
- Their research group or centre
- The methods used in their research
- Available facilities
- Whether their work genuinely aligns with your proposed project
A first email should explain your current qualification, previous research experience, proposed topic, why that academic's work matches your project, your intended start period and any funding plans — with an academic CV, transcripts and a short proposal attached where appropriate. Generic bulk emails demonstrate no research fit. Check the university's process first: some use an EOI or internal matching rather than expecting you to contact supervisors independently.
The application, step by step
- Identify the research field — the broad problem you want to investigate
- Assess your existing research background, and whether your previous degree contained enough preparation
- Decide whether you need a research master's or can apply directly for a PhD
- Compare university research strengths, centres, facilities, projects and supervisors
- Check the qualification, grade, research and English requirements
- Identify a supervisor or research project, following that university's process
- Develop the research proposal, Statement of Intent or research-experience statement the provider specifies
- Prepare documents: academic CV, transcripts, certificates, previous thesis, publications, English evidence, referees and ID
- Submit an EOI or obtain supervisor support where required — supervisor interest does not guarantee admission
- Complete the formal HDR application
- Apply for scholarships, which may be combined with admission or separate
- Complete any interview or research-readiness assessment
- Receive and satisfy the offer
- Complete the CoE and student visa process where applicable
This is generic process guidance. Research admission processes vary between public universities and private higher education providers — follow the instructions of the provider you are applying to.
English language requirements
There is no single national English score for every Australian research master's. A common reference point is around IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, often with minimum component requirements — but some disciplines require more. Monash's graduate research requirements vary by faculty, with several STEM and health faculties using 6.5 overall and minimum 6.0 components while Arts, Business, Education and Law use higher standards. UTS likewise varies across individual research programs.
Funding
Scholarships, the RTP and Australia Awards
Funding is competitive and should never be presented as automatic. Being academically eligible and being competitive for a scholarship are two separate assessments.
Where funding comes from
- Australian Government Research Training Program scholarships
- University-funded research scholarships
- Tuition scholarships
- Faculty or research-centre scholarships
- Project-funded research positions
- Industry-linked funding
- External government or sponsor scholarships
The Research Training Program
You do not apply to the Government for it
The RTP funds eligible higher education providers to support domestic and international students undertaking research master's and research doctorate degrees. Depending on the award, it can include a tuition-fee offset, a living-cost stipend and HDR-related allowances. Applications and selection are managed by participating providers, not by the Australian Government — and international students are eligible for consideration through the provider's own competitive process.
2027 base rate
AUD 35,550
per year, full time
2027 maximum
AUD 55,537
per year, full time
Providers set the rate they offer within the framework and may combine RTP support with institutional or external funding. For a research master's, support can extend up to two years full time or four part time.
Australia Awards, for Nepalese applicants
For study commencing in 2027, the official Nepal intake included both Master's by Coursework and Master's by Research opportunities. The Nepal requirements for research applicants included:
- Three referee reports — two academic and one professional
- A research proposal
- Evidence of communication with a potential supervisor providing in-principle support for the proposal
The 2027 round closed on 30 April 2026. If you are planning a future intake, check the new Nepal country profile — eligible qualifications, priority fields, requirements and deadlines all change between rounds.
Fees and costs
There is no single national tuition fee for international research master's students. Fees vary by university, research field, laboratory or specialist requirements, duration, scholarship status and commencement year.
Distinguish clearly between admission without funding — where tuition and living costs are privately funded — and admission with a scholarship. A scholarship may cover tuition only, a stipend only, or a combination. Always read the actual offer conditions.
While you study
Student visa and work rights
Subclass 500
International students on an eligible research master's generally use the Student visa (subclass 500), and normally need a Confirmation of Enrolment from the registered provider before lodging. Overseas Student Health Cover must be maintained for the required period.
Confirm your course is registered on CRICOS — the official register of institutions and courses available to international students.
No fortnightly cap
Under current settings, students who have starteda master's by research or a doctoral degree are not subject to the standard 48-hours-per-fortnight limit that applies to most student visa holders. The exemption begins once the research course has commenced.
Always check the conditions attached to your own visa through VEVO rather than assuming the class rule applies to you.
Time for examination
Postgraduate research students may also receive additional student visa time for thesis examination, compared with the standard course-completion periods, under current Home Affairs settings.
Visa rules change. Verify all of this at the time you apply rather than relying on a settings summary.
Post-study work rightsWhat comes next
After completing a Master by Research
- 01
Apply for a PhD
The most common academic pathway. A strong research master's evidences independent research ability, advanced methodology, thesis writing, academic writing, project management, supervisor collaboration and readiness for a larger doctoral project. It does not guarantee admission, but it establishes the capability universities look for.
- 02
Progress or transfer to a PhD
At universities permitting an upgrade pathway, a research master's candidate may seek transfer after demonstrating sufficient progress and doctoral-level potential. Approval requirements differ significantly, so this should never be promised at application stage.
- 03
Research employment
Research-oriented roles in universities, research institutes, government, public policy, consulting, R&D, healthcare research, laboratories, technology, engineering, environmental organisations, agriculture, data and analytics, NGOs and industry research. Options depend strongly on field and professional background.
- 04
Specialist professional career
Advanced research training strengthens careers requiring evidence analysis, problem-solving, research design, data interpretation, technical reporting, policy evaluation, innovation and specialist subject expertise. A research degree does not itself guarantee employment, migration, registration or residency.
From Nepal
What to prepare, and what to avoid
Australian universities assess overseas qualifications individually. Do not convert a Nepalese GPA or percentage into an Australian Honours classification, an H1 or H2A, or a university WAM yourself — universities assess equivalence themselves, and a high coursework GPA without substantial research may still be insufficient for direct PhD entry.
Prepare complete academic transcripts, degree certificates, dissertation or thesis evidence, research-method subjects, publications where applicable, research experience, academic references, your proposal and English-language evidence.
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming every master's automatically qualifies you for PhD entry
- Assuming a high GPA replaces research experience
- Assuming any master's containing a small project is a Master by Research
- Assuming obtaining a supervisor guarantees admission
- Assuming admission means scholarship funding
- Sending one research proposal unchanged to every university
- Assuming every university expects applicants to contact supervisors the same way
- Assuming every research master's automatically transfers into a PhD
- Assuming every scholarship covers both tuition and living costs
- Assuming a research qualification guarantees employment or migration outcomes

Frequently Asked Questions
Not necessarily. There is no universal Australian rule requiring every research master's applicant to have publications. But publications, conference papers, previous research projects and research employment strengthen the evidence of research capability, and can matter particularly for competitive scholarship assessment. Never exaggerate or misrepresent publication status.
No. Applicants with sufficient previous research preparation may qualify directly for PhD admission. The target university's doctoral entry standard decides it.
Yes, at some universities, provided your master's contains sufficient research and you meet the required academic standard. Monash, for example, recognises a research thesis or project equivalent to at least 25% of one year of full-time study as one possible route.
Not always. Some programs require a proposal during application, while some structured research master's degrees teach proposal development after enrolment. You may instead need a short Statement of Intent or evidence of previous research experience. Prior publications are not a universal admission requirement.
Do not compare universities on overall ranking alone. For research study, investigate:
- Supervisor expertise and research-topic alignment
- Recent publications and active research projects
- Research centres, laboratories and facilities
- Data or fieldwork access
- Scholarship availability and supervisory capacity
- Industry partnerships and research training
- Candidature milestones, thesis requirements and publication opportunities
- Career development, location, and the total cost if funding is not secured
A highly suitable supervisor and research environment is often more relevant to an individual project than a university's ranking.
Yes. International students can be considered for RTP scholarships at eligible higher education providers, but selection is competitive and administered by the provider — you do not apply to the Australian Government directly.
No. PhD admission and scholarship selection are separate assessments. You can be eligible for a PhD and still not receive a scholarship.
Commonly around one to two years full time, with many Australian programs structured as two years. Under the RTP, scholarship support for a research master's can run up to 2 years full time or 4 years part time.
An accredited eligible research master's — an HDR — can qualify for RTP consideration. A normal coursework master's does not, and neither does undergraduate study.
A master's without a thesis does not automatically prevent future PhD study, but it makes research readiness harder to demonstrate. Depending on the university, possible routes include:
- A Master by Research or MPhil
- A coursework master's containing a substantial research component
- Honours or another research-preparation program where appropriate
- Assessment of equivalent research experience, publications or professional research capability
The appropriate pathway is university- and discipline-specific.
It can — particularly where your career has involved investigation, analysis, technical projects, policy work, innovation, data, evaluation or industry research. But there is no universal rule that 10+ years of employment by itself creates eligibility, and years alone do not demonstrate research readiness. Universities are more interested in what you actually did:
- Have you investigated complex problems?
- Produced technical or analytical reports?
- Led research or evaluation projects?
- Collected and interpreted data?
- Developed new systems, policies or solutions?
- Contributed to publications or professional research?
We recommend presenting professional experience as evidence of research capability, not simply as a number of years worked.
