Popular Postgraduate Programs in Australia

The right master's startswith your bachelor's.

Coursework master's degrees are a very large share of Australia's international enrolments. This guide maps the most relevant postgraduate fields to the bachelor backgrounds that commonly support admission — and separates general academic master's from accredited entry-to-practice programs, where entry, placements and registration are far stricter.

How Australian universities assess Nepalese applicants

  • 01

    No universal GPA for Nepal

Universities assess the level, duration, institution, subject content and results of your prior qualification — there is no single postgraduate GPA or percentage requirement for Nepalese applicants.

  • 02

    3-year vs 4-year bachelor

Acceptance of three-year versus four-year Nepalese bachelor degrees is institution- and course-specific. Some programs also need a cognate degree, prerequisite subjects, registration, a portfolio or work experience.

  • 03

    English scores are indicative

The English scores in this guide are typical starting points only — never guaranteed national minimums. Professional registration can set a higher bar than university admission.

Suitable bachelor's graduates

  • MBA and many Management, HR, Marketing and Supply Chain programs may accept almost any recognised bachelor discipline — BBA, BBS, BBM, BIM, BA, BSc, BIT and Engineering.
  • Master of Professional Accounting is designed for graduates seeking accounting competency and may accept non-accounting backgrounds, but CPA Australia / CA ANZ later assess your actual subject coverage — not just the degree title.
  • Business Analytics commonly suits BBA/BBS/BBM/BIM graduates with quantitative study, and BSc CSIT, BIT, BCA, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics and Engineering graduates.

Key entry considerations

MBAs frequently consider professional or managerial experience, although early-career MBAs exist. Finance and Analytics may require prior statistics, mathematics, economics or finance. Check Professional Accounting programs for professional-body accreditation and competency coverage.

Professional recognition

Accounting programs may be accredited or recognised by CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants ANZ. Some information-systems or analytics programs hold Australian Computer Society (ACS) accreditation.

Typical English

IELTS 6.5

Indicative only

Most Business master's degrees ask for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, or equivalent (commonly PTE Academic 58–64, TOEFL iBT 79–90).

MBAs and some higher-ranked business schools often set IELTS 7.0 overall, and some also require a GMAT/GRE score. CPA Australia and CA ANZ do not set a separate English test for professional recognition.

Academic guide

A recognised bachelor degree is the normal entry basis. GPA or percentage, work experience and quantitative prerequisites vary considerably by university and program.

Alternative pathway options

Pre-Master's, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, ELICOS where English is the main gap; work-experience entry where explicitly permitted.

Career opportunities

  • Management Consultant
  • Business Analyst
  • Project Manager
  • Supply Chain Professional
  • HR Professional
  • Marketing Specialist
  • Financial Analyst
  • Accountant / Auditor
  • Operations Manager
  • Business Development Manager

Some roles need registration, admission or experience first. A course does not guarantee employment or migration.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions

These are three different Australian master's qualifications, and the difference matters well beyond the name:

  • A Master's by Coursework is mainly taught subjects, and may include a capstone, research project or minor thesis.
  • A Master's by Research has a much stronger research component, normally supervised research and a substantial thesis.
  • A Master's Degree (Extended) is generally built around professional practice, and can include significant practical, professional or research components.

The right option depends on whether your objective is professional advancement, career conversion, professional practice or research.

Yes. Two universities may offer similarly named master's degrees with different subjects, accreditation, prerequisites, placements and professional outcomes. This matters most where professional accreditation or registration is involved — TEQSA notes that where accreditation is required, its absence or loss can affect a graduate's ability to progress toward practising in that profession.

Possibly. Australian providers may grant Recognition of Prior Learning, course credit or exemptions based on relevant previous study, training, work experience or professional learning. The university decides whether your prior learning is sufficiently equivalent to parts of the new course, and where credit is granted the master's can become shorter. Before accepting credit, understand exactly which subjects are being removed, how much the course duration changes, and whether the shorter study plan affects anything else you are planning — a shortened course can change post-study work outcomes as well as the fee.

No — and the difference runs in both directions, during the course and after it.

  • A typical Master's by Coursework is generally subject to the standard Student visa limit of 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session, subject to individual visa conditions.
  • A student who has commenced a Master's by Research or a doctoral degree can work more than 48 hours per fortnight during their studies.
  • After graduation, the Temporary Graduate visa's Post-Higher Education Work stream is generally two years for a Master's by Coursework or Extended, and three years for a Master's by Research.

Always confirm your own conditions through VEVO, and treat those 485 periods as subject to meeting all visa requirements and any applicable exceptions.

Yes — relevant professional experience can be a genuine strength, particularly for career-focused and professionally oriented programs. Universities may consider your work history when assessing:

  • Your suitability for the program
  • Whether your experience supports the proposed field of study
  • Alternative admission pathways where academic entry is borderline
  • Recognition of Prior Learning or advanced standing in some programs
  • Whether the master's represents a logical next step in your career

Universities look beyond the number of years, though. Ten years of experience counts for most when you can demonstrate what you actually achieved during them.

Yes. Being over 35 does not by itself prevent an adult applicant from applying for a Student visa (subclass 500). Mature applicants should be able to explain clearly why returning to full-time study at this stage of their career makes sense and how the qualification will benefit their future — the Genuine Student assessment considers current employment, economic circumstances, previous education, course relevance and expected future benefits. There is a separate issue for post-study planning: the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) generally requires applicants to be 35 or under when applying. Different age provisions apply to eligible graduates of a Master's by Research or a doctoral degree, who may be under 50 when applying.

Potentially, yes. Many professionals build careers different from their original bachelor's degree — for example:

  • Bachelor of Science → 10 years in banking → Master of Finance
  • Bachelor of Engineering → project-management career → Master of Project Management
  • Bachelor of Business → long-term IT and business-analysis experience → Master of Information Systems

Whether it works depends on the exact university and its entry requirements. Some programs require a relevant bachelor's or specific prerequisite subjects; others accept broader academic backgrounds and take professional experience into account. From a Genuine Student perspective, Home Affairs specifically considers whether the proposed course is relevant to past or proposed future employment — so for an experienced professional, the work history is often what explains why the new field is not really new.

Not with “I want an international qualification”. A stronger explanation identifies a genuine professional limitation you are addressing, or a specific future objective you cannot reach without it. Home Affairs considers the value of the proposed course to your future — whether it is relevant to past or proposed employment, and whether it could improve your employment prospects.
